Leaving a legacy

When you're planning your Will, your loved ones should always come first. But it's also an ideal opportunity to leave a lasting gift to a cause you believe in.

For many people, leaving a gift in their Will may be the one and only time they can afford to make a charitable donation. And that's what makes it so special!

Gifts from legacies account for up to 50% of the income of some Will Aid Charities. Without them, the charities - and the communities they help - would face a very uncertain future.

Celebrate your life by saving others

Sopheak, from Cambodia, had four brothers and sisters who all died in infancy from dengue fever. But a £3,000 legacy from Mr S, an ActionAid supporter, paid for vital protection training that means Sopheak and her fellow villagers no longer have to live in fear of the disease.

Three ways to leave a legacy

There are three types of legacy gift. You can:

  • Leave a share of your estate (a residuary gift)
  • Leave a fixed amount of money (a pecuniary gift)
  • Leave a particular item (a specific gift)

The most valuable gifts to charities are residuary gifts. But any gift in your Will, large or small, will leave a legacy of hope for vulnerable people in the UK and around the world.

Reduce your inheritance tax bill

Legacy gifts to charities are tax-free under current legislation. Including a charitable bequest in your Will could save some of your hard-earned cash going to the tax man!
