Trócaire envisages a just world where people's dignity is ensured, rights are respected and basic needs are met; where there is equity in the sharing of resources and people are free to be the authors of their own development.

Trócaire works in Latin America, Africa and Asia. It has supported over 9,000 projects in over 60 countries since 1973. Trócaire's income for 2006/7 was was £54.3m. (€72m) Trócaire spent 7% of this income on administration and fundraising, 93% went to our overseas development projects. In early 2008, we will provide a report on the work we have carried out to date following the tsunami in Southeast Asia three years ago.

Trócaire raises funds through its Lenten Campaign, 24 Fast and Global Gift Campaign. It also sources funding from both the Irish and UK Government through co-financing.

Trócaire works to support long-term development projects overseas for sustainable development and to provide relief during emergencies; and at home to inform the Irish public about the root causes of poverty and injustice and mobilise the public to bring about global change.

Fresh hope for Malita

Malita comes from a family of 10, 6 girls and 4 boys. In 1996, her father died from AIDS. In Malita's own words she describes her life:

"Life for me really changed 8 months ago when I had my baby girl, Lucy. Her father is not around so I knew that Lucy would depend on me to survive. I never got a chance to go to secondary school but I did get some education at primary school. I had wanted to train as a tailor but there were no courses in my area. The only option was a carpentry course.

I was very unsure of this as nobody in my area had heard of a female carpenter. However, my mother encouraged me and I wanted to be able to care for Lucy. Now that I am trained, I craft at least one item a week. Recently I sold a bed and table so with the money I make I can sometimes buy extra food and also I am building my own house at the moment!"

Trócaire has been working in Malawi with partners and people just like Malita since the late-1990s. There was a major response from Trócaire and the Irish people to the famine of 2002. The chronic lack of food security in the country is perhaps the biggest problem facing ordinary people, so Trócaire has a large programme for improving livelihood security.

This involves giving support to community development organisations that assist rural farmers to improve their techniques so as to have more productive land, and to maintain the quality of the land against environmental degradation. These partner organisations are also committed to assisting individuals in preparing for disasters such as floods and droughts, and having back-up plans when these disasters occur, this is known as disaster risk management.

Trócaire has regional offices in Cork, Dublin, Belfast and its head office is in Maynooth Co Kildare. For more information, please contact:
